How to hide your IP address
Five ways to keep websites from seeing your real IP, compared simply.
Websites see your IP address every time you visit, and it reveals your approximate location and internet provider. Here's how to hide it. Check your current IP first, then check again after you switch to see it change.
| Method | Privacy | Speed | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPN | High | Fast | About $3 to $13 a month | Everyday privacy, public Wi-Fi, streaming |
| Tor Browser | Very high | Slow | Free | Maximum anonymity |
| Proxy server | Low to medium | Varies | Free or paid | Quick, one-site changes |
| Mobile data | Low | Fast | Your data plan | A quick switch to a different IP |
| iCloud Private Relay | Medium | Fast | With iCloud+ | Safari users on Apple devices |
Prices are approximate and vary by plan.
1. Use a VPN (the best option for most people)
A VPN routes your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server elsewhere, so websites see the VPN server's IP instead of yours. It also protects you on public Wi-Fi. Pick a provider with a published no-logs policy and an independent audit.
2. Use the Tor Browser
Tor bounces your traffic through three volunteer-run servers, which makes it very hard to trace. It's free but noticeably slower, and some websites block it.
3. Use a proxy server
A proxy changes your IP for one browser or app, but usually doesn't encrypt your traffic. Free proxies can be slow and may log or sell your data, so avoid them for anything sensitive.
4. Switch to mobile data
Turning off Wi-Fi gives you your mobile carrier's IP instead of your home one. It doesn't add privacy, but it's a quick way to get a different IP.
5. Use iCloud Private Relay
If you pay for iCloud+, Private Relay hides your IP in Safari. Turn it on in Settings > your name > iCloud > Private Relay.
Did it work?
After you connect, reload ipfind.org. If the IP and location have changed, your real IP is hidden.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to hide my IP address?
In the US and most countries, yes. Using a VPN or Tor is legal. What you do while connected still has to follow the law.
Does incognito mode hide my IP?
No. Private or incognito browsing only stops your browser from saving history on your device. Websites still see your real IP address.
What is the best free way to hide my IP?
Tor Browser is free and very private but slow. Proton VPN also has a free plan with no data cap.
