How to change your IP address
Change your public or local IP on any device, step by step.
There are two kinds of IP address you might want to change: your public IP, which websites see, and your local IP, which your router assigns to your device. Here's how to change each. Check your current IP first, then compare after.
Change your public IP address
1. Use a VPN (fastest and most reliable)
A VPN swaps your public IP for one of its servers' addresses in seconds, and you can pick the country. It's the only method that also hides your location. See our VPN picks.
2. Restart your router or modem
Most home connections get a dynamic IP from the provider. Unplug your modem for at least 5 minutes (some providers need longer, even overnight), then plug it back in. You may get a new IP, but many providers hand back the same one.
3. Switch networks
Turning off Wi-Fi and using mobile data, or joining another Wi-Fi network, gives you a different public IP right away.
4. Ask your internet provider
Your provider can assign a new IP. Some charge extra for a static IP that never changes, which is useful for hosting servers or remote access.
Change your local IP address
Windows
Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
This asks your router for a fresh local address. To set one manually, go to Settings > Network & internet > your connection > IP assignment > Edit.
Mac
Go to System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details > TCP/IP and click Renew DHCP Lease.
iPhone
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the (i) next to your network, then tap Renew Lease.
Android
"Forget" the Wi-Fi network and reconnect, or set a static IP under the network's advanced settings.
Why change your IP?
- To get around an IP-based block or ban on a website or game.
- To fix a wrong IP location.
- For privacy, so sites can't link your visits to your home connection.
- To fix network problems such as IP conflicts on your home network.
Frequently asked questions
Does restarting my router change my IP?
Sometimes. Leave the modem unplugged for at least 5 minutes. Many providers reassign the same IP, so a VPN is more reliable.
Does ipconfig /release change my public IP?
No. It renews the local IP your router gives your device. Your public IP comes from your internet provider.
Is changing my IP address legal?
Yes. Changing your IP with a VPN, a router restart or another network is legal. Using it to break a site's terms or the law is not.
